Photos, and Semesters End

Today was the first real warm day of the year, and Elyse and I went on a photoshoot fieldtrip. Elyse modelled for me for some conceptual photos (a few previews on my photo flickr). I also apparently spent time taking some exciting shots of the ground, as seen above. It's only two weeks until the end of the semester, but I start working full-time on May 1st. I'm looking forward to a change of pace for a few months, working regular hours instead of spending late nights and days on school projects. I'll be working as a design intern, so I'm hoping that I'll continue to be able to develop creatively over the summer.

ACADSA Show and Sale

The ACADSA Show and Sale starts today at 3PM. It's at the ACAD Main Mall (1407-14 Ave NW), and is a bi-annual event which allows students to show and sell their work. I'm putting work in for the third year in a row, selling mostly framed prints and a few original pieces. I sold all of my work in the Winter Show and Sale, so hopefully this is another good round. It's also Juno weekend, so it might be slower than usual.

It's always surprising to see what artwork sells and what doesn't. I've seen pieces sold that I would never imagine buying, and amazing pieces left behind. Calgary is a strange art market-- there's enough money but I don't think as a city we're nearly as culturally developed as we need to be. I participated in a group photography show over a year ago, which showcased a variety of photographic techniques and concepts. The pieces that sold were the images that were very clear, sharp, and non-engaging and would look good hanging in an office or new condo. The pieces that were, in my opinion, the most creative, exploratory, and emotive were widely admired and talked about but not sold. It would be nice to see Calgary develop to a point where an artist's success isn't determined by how well their work matches the IKEA furniture.

Corporate Illustration

Here's two out of three illustrations I just finished for a class assignment. The illustrations are for a "corporate" illustration, I chose to do an independent coffeeshop. The three illustrations show a fair trade coffeeworker, a barista, and a coffeeshop scene.
The upcoming month is going to be really busy with my end-of-semester workload. Our final illustration project will be a story illustration. I may illustrate a work-in-progress story by Sara K, about a pickle and his orangutan roommate.

'Silent Imaginings' Series

I've been developing the last few rolls from a photoshoot I did last fall. Last summer was the first time I really started considering photography as an art form, and I've been building my collection of cameras since then. I'm still really in love with film, I'm mostly shooting with an old Canon TX SLR from my parents' days that I discovered rummaging in the shed. I'm also using my holga, and a few other lomography cameras I've collected. I've been getting more condifent with the medium, I recently had my first showing of photos at the Kitschykoo! group show at Ideal. This summer as the weather gets warmer I want to get out and take more photos. I want to do more work on this series I've started, and see where else I can take it.

New Blog

Here's my first post in the new blog. I've had a friends-only livejournal for several years, which I'll still be using for personal blogging melodrama best not made public. I'll try to use this to post recent work, inspirations, and any other creative experimentation I come up with. For any new readers who don't know me-- I'm a design student at the Alberta College of Art and Design, majoring in Advertising with a minor in Graphic Design. I started at the college in the Fine Arts stream, and have continued to pursue my own personal work. My art and photography experiments have shown in several small galleries throughout the city, and I'm hoping to continue to expand my art practice. My interests are in music and fashion, and I'm hoping my career will go in that direction. I'm also committed to running and weight training, cooking and wine, and I really, really like bunnies.
