The ACADSA Show and Sale starts today at 3PM. It's at the ACAD Main Mall (1407-14 Ave NW), and is a bi-annual event which allows students to show and sell their work. I'm putting work in for the third year in a row, selling mostly framed prints and a few original pieces. I sold all of my work in the Winter Show and Sale, so hopefully this is another good round. It's also Juno weekend, so it might be slower than usual.

It's always surprising to see what artwork sells and what doesn't. I've seen pieces sold that I would never imagine buying, and amazing pieces left behind. Calgary is a strange art market-- there's enough money but I don't think as a city we're nearly as culturally developed as we need to be. I participated in a group photography show over a year ago, which showcased a variety of photographic techniques and concepts. The pieces that sold were the images that were very clear, sharp, and non-engaging and would look good hanging in an office or new condo. The pieces that were, in my opinion, the most creative, exploratory, and emotive were widely admired and talked about but not sold. It would be nice to see Calgary develop to a point where an artist's success isn't determined by how well their work matches the IKEA furniture.
